What is rattan lighting and how is it made?

Unique, organic and warm. Rattan lighting adds a natural touch to your interior and is a true example of pure craftsmanship. The lamps are made from flexible rattan wood, which can be bent into fluid, organic shapes thanks to a special steam technique. The result is a range of unique, exclusively handmade and high-quality design lamps that are both aesthetic and functional.

Although people often search for reed pendant lamps or small reed lamps, there is an important difference. Reed is a hollow, fragile water plant that is much more delicate than rattan. Rattan wood comes from the rattan palm, a strong climbing plant that mainly grows in tropical rainforests.

High-quality design lamps

Our lamps have the warm appearance of elegantly woven furniture, while offering the durability and solid quality of real wood. When the light shines through, the sturdy weave creates a beautiful diffused effect.

Types of rattan lighting for your interior

Are you looking for an eye-catcher above the dining table or subtle accent lighting for a reading corner? Vincent Sheppard offers a versatile range. An impressive rattan pendant lamp above the dining area instantly adds character, while an elegant rattan floor lamp or a refined rattan table lamp on a sideboard adds the right amount of layering to your lighting plan. This ensures that the lighting always perfectly suits your interior style.

Whether it shines above a generous dining table or hangs as an eye-catcher in the entrance hall, the refined weave breaks up the light in a magical way. Thanks to the solid wood material, our collection of rattan pendant lamps offers an exclusive look and a sleek, durable finish that will last for generations.

Rattan floor lamps

With a rattan floor lamp, you can easily add layers to your lighting plan. While a pendant lamp forms the basis, a floor lamp creates intimate islands of light. Frequently asked questions

Rattan

Discover more about rattan and how to care for rattan furniture.

No, rattan chairs are not the same as reed chairs or regular woven chairs.

  • Rattan is a solid wood-like material derived from the rattan palm, a tropical climbing plant. Rattan stems are steamed and bent into the desired shape under high temperatures. Once cooled, the material is incredibly strong and lasts for decades.

  • Reed is a hollow water plant that is very fragile and is typically used for fine decorative weaving. The term "reed chairs" is often incorrectly used to refer to rattan chairs.

  • Woven chairs can be made from various materials. This refers to the technique, not the material itself. Chairs can be woven using rattan, Paper Loom, paper cord, or synthetic materials.

Dust your rattan chair regularly with a soft cloth and you can enjoy it for years! Below you will find several maintenance tips for rattan:

  • Regular dusting: Use a soft cloth or duster to gently remove dust.

  • Cleaning stains: Use a damp cloth with mild soapy water, making sure the cloth is not too wet. Dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent mold and mildew.

  • Deep cleaning: Use a soft-bristled brush or a toothbrush and warm soapy water to clean the weave and crevices. Ensure the furniture is completely dry afterward.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use bleach or abrasive scouring pads to clean the rattan.

No, natural rattan chairs or lamps are sensitive to moisture and should not be left outside. Rattan absorbs water and will mold, turn black, and eventually break if you leave the rattan furniture in the garden. Intense sunlight can also cause rattan to dry out and start splintering.

Chairs or lamps with a rattan look made of plastic can perfectly be left outside. Synthetic wicker is made for the outdoors and has the following advantages:

  • UV-resistant and will therefore not discolor

  • Waterproof and frost-resistant

  • Can be left outside all year round
